Formica

Today’s clip is called Formica, which is Italian for ant. That’s what this clip is about: Ants. It is actually a simple camera shot of some ants. As it turns out this was just a tiny test project. The result however is rocking! Sweet and fresh colors, lovely play of depth of field and ants working away like crazy. I tend to be fascinated by how ants work. I don’t ...

Little planets and recurring spirals

Let’s start this week by being in awe. Check out this reel by Frank Beltrán. It’s all about taking existing photography concepts and techniques, and applying them in video. The result is amazing. I’m pretty intrigued by how the recurring infinite spirals are done! It looks amazing! (here’s a little behind-the-scenes). I myself have been playing with the ‘little planet’ effect quite a lot (for example here), but Frank’s demoreel makes it clear that he completely mastered those techniques. And that’s what demoreels are for: Showing what you’re made off and you, sir Frank Beltrán, seem to be made of solid ...

Mortal Kombat – Legacy

Yes, I know, it’s been a while since I posted a cool/interesting/inspiring video on monday. Lots of stuff has happened: I moved to a new server (which led to lots of unexpected and unwanted downtime), I had to head out of town for about a month to work at a full-time non-computer related job. And I wanted to have a life for a few weeks, which was nice . All that lead to no motion on monday. However I’m back, so let’s do this! To make up for the silence of the past weeks, I’ve got something very cool. For ...

MTV Idents

You might have noticed that MTV changed their logo and with that, they got some new Idents and boy, oh boy, do I love them. My favorite is by far Closing & Caring, created by the German company Sehsucht. Other Idents were created by The Mill, blacklist TV & ilovedust! If you want a sneek peak on how this was created, check the behind the scenes Happy 30th birthday, MTV! You still look smashingly awesome.

Decades

This piece was originally conceived as a part of CG set for a commercial spot about hamburgers throughout recent American history. However, the potential also existed for the set to be the stage for a visual exploration in lighting, composition, and cinematography. So the assets were repurposed to try and achieve that goal. The lighting was originally intended to evoke a sense of an old game show stage after hours, think Price Is Right Showcase after the lights have gone down. Although it did evolve, it should still capture that low-lighting feeling. Loving the atmosphere here and the soundtrack is just ...

FreyLove

A friend of mine made this video in an attempt to get back the love of his life. FreyLove from Lifelines on Vimeo. “This video is dedicated to the love of my life, Freyja. She broke up with me a couple of days ago because she wanted a new direction in her life and the feelings for me were burned out. I wanted to let her know that whatever that direction is, i want to be a part of it. And those feelings she had, they can return. The footage has been shot random over the years on times we spend with each other. Hopefully ...

Riveurs enjienrd

In case you have trouble pronouncing that title: It’s a phonetical version of ‘reverse engineered’. This clip is intense, I swear. It’s full of detail. It’s full of agressive cuts, lots of post editing and color correction. I love the overexposure from the sky. Really helps the illusion of making it look real. I don’t really know if the author is trying to tell a story here but I was fully taken in from the first second. I’m totally intrigued. What I especially love about this piece is it engages with your subconsciousness. You see so much stuff for only fractions ...

Bye bye China

This is it, my last footsteps on Chinese land (for now), it really has been an amazing experience, made some super awesome friends who always helped me when I needed them. It has also been a great life experience which changed my life in a good way, i’m only 21 and been to China for 3 months, that’s just awsome. Since we only fly back home on wednesday night, we still got 3 days to explore Macau and Hong Kong. This morning we took a ferry to Macau, its just a place you have to see, in the late afternoon we will take ...

Cambridge 2011

I started on this international adventure 14 Weeks ago. Now, it comes to an end, and I can look back at an unforgettable experience. The past three months I have been working at CARET, a place where I felt almost immediately at home. I will definitely carry the city of Cambridge in my heart for the rest of my life. CARET I can hardly think of a day that I didn’t want to go to work. It wasn’t like school… at all! I had to work on fun projects, culminating with the iPad application. It has a nice working environment and the people working here are ...

140dB

This week’s motion clip is called 140dB. I love it because of the experimental approach to it. There’s a lot of aggressive cuts, tons of tiny details and scratched/broken music. It doesn’t get any better than this. There’s not a lot of CGI (and there’s no need for more) but it gives real depth to what Tadas Svilainis is trying to show here. I especially love the added noise. It helps incorporate the noise in the sound into the visual aspect. Just as for every little bit of color correction and other effects. Everything feels out of place and affected by ...

Eindopdracht Major Atelier 2

Manhattan in motion

Most of you already know I experimented a lot with timelapse not too long ago. This weekend I came across this beautiful timelapse in Manhattan, New York. It features some great spots, beautiful vistas and very creative point of views in New York. I love the panning and rotating shots. I always wanted to do those myself but I didn’t have the gear (and let’s just say it for the sake of the argument: That stuff is pretty expensive). However, Josh Owens went that extra mile, making those incredible overhead shots and moving the camera over the edge of buildings enabling ...
